Smart carbon tracking for TV production
Louise Bray is the founder of Green Wing, a Wales-based company developing innovative technology to transform environmental sustainability in TV production. With 25 years of experience producing award-winning documentaries and factual content for broadcasters, her journey from TV producer to sustainability innovator began when she witnessed the industry’s environmental impact firsthand.
The carbon footprint of just one hour of television equals the annual energy consumption of three large homes. Yet, there’s currently no effective way to capture or calculate emissions accurately. While broadcasters have committed to net-zero targets, existing carbon reporting tools are time-consuming, costly and inefficient. Green Wing’s web and mobile app streamlines carbon footprint collection using real-time geospatial data, providing unprecedented accuracy while promoting shared responsibility across production teams.
Louise says Green Wing’s mission is to “Help reduce the environmental impact of the TV industry by streamlining sustainability, increasing carbon data accuracy, and engaging hearts and minds.”
Her achievements include securing an Innovate UK Creative Catalyst Award and BBC/Media Cymru Content Innovation Award. “I am absolutely thrilled to be a Women in Innovation Award winner,” says Louise. “To be recognised alongside such an incredible group of talented and inspiring women is truly humbling. This honour is a testament to not just my own innovation journey, but to the power of women leading change and breaking barriers in innovation. I am deeply grateful for this recognition and can’t wait to get started!”
Louise has found the biggest barrier to overcome has been “Facing skepticism, often from those who don’t fully understand the factual TV landscape.”Scepticism has been the biggest barrier for Louise to overcome, often from those who “don’t fully understand the factual TV landscape.” She says, “I’ve surrounded myself with great people, sought mentorship and kept believing in myself.”
Her advice to aspiring women innovators? “Don’t be afraid to be bold with your innovation and to spark change. Be authentic, find your tribe, and lead with empathy.”
