Engineering next-generation sustainable textiles

Victoria Mataczynski is the CEO of London-based Nanoloom, which is developing graphene-based fibres and yarns for sustainable fashion. Growing up by the ocean in Australia, Victoria witnessed firsthand the impact of microplastics on marine environments, which later inspired her mission to create better textile solutions.

The fashion industry faces critical environmental challenges with synthetic textiles contributing significantly to water pollution and waste. Nanoloom’s graphene-based fibres are non-toxic, biodegradable, and recyclable, using 90% less water in production while eliminating microfibre shedding. The material surpasses traditional fibres like spandex and nylon in strength and durability, making sustainable fashion more accessible.

“Our mission is to achieve for circular, next generation materials what DuPont achieved for plastics,” says Victoria.

Her achievements include winning the prestigious H&M Global Change Award, regarded as the “Nobel Prize of Fashion,” alongside securing multiple Innovate UK grants. Before founding Nanoloom, Victoria’s experience spans from corporate law managing billion-dollar deals to leading AI product design at a dealTech startup.

“I’m excited to showcase our product and what’s possible,” Victoria says of winning the Women in Innovation Award.

“Through the programme, we aim to create footwear that can be chemically recycled back to polymer in a few hours and remade into new ultra-durable, lightweight shoes,” Victoria explains. “This will demonstrate a fully circular product with little to no waste.”

“Access to funding has been a significant challenge in hardTech innovation,” she reflects. “Innovate UK and other grant funding providers have been key in filling this gap.”

Her advice to aspiring women innovators? “If a thing is humanly possible, consider it within your reach.”
