Empowering independent live events through technology

Victoria Smith, Finance Director of Ghostwriter Consultancy & Events, is transforming how independent venues operate through innovative event management technology. Starting her career at 16 by selling concert tickets, she progressed through senior industry positions before choosing to champion grassroots venues and their vital role in nurturing emerging talent and fostering local cultures.

The independent live events sector faces significant challenges, with 10% of UK grassroots venues closing in the past year. Victoria’s software platform strengthens cultural ecosystems by providing tools typically restricted to corporate venues. The solution enables independent venues to operate sustainably through automated processes and data-driven insights.

“My mission is to empower the independent live events sector by providing tools that level the playing field, helping grassroots venues and promoters thrive as vital cultural hubs within their communities,” says Victoria.

Her achievements include securing over £8.5 million in grant funding during the pandemic, providing essential lifelines for venues to continue operating. At Ghostwriter, a female-led company where over half the team are women, she champions inclusive practices that support diverse talents and working parents.

“Being a Women in Innovation Award winner is an incredible honour,” says Victoria. “This award is a powerful reminder that innovation can come from any field, and I’m proud to represent the cultural sector.”

“My biggest barrier has been overcoming imposter syndrome,” Victoria reflects. “For eight years, I searched for an affordable digital solution, but when none appeared, I doubted whether I could create it. I finally realised that I needed to stop searching and build this solution myself.”

Her advice to aspiring innovators? “Trust your perspective and take ownership of your ideas. Sometimes, especially in industries dominated by traditional structures, it can feel like your ideas don’t quite fit. But often, that fresh approach leads to the most impactful innovations.”
