Making speech therapy accessible through AI and gamification

Yun Bing is co-founder of Beautiful Voice, an innovative digital health platform that makes speech and language therapy more accessible and engaging. Combining her decade of experience in computational modelling of stroke with a passion for helping those in need, she founded Beautiful Voice to transform communication rehabilitation through technology.

Communication difficulties affect over 1.2 million adults with neurological conditions in the UK. While high-intensity therapy is crucial for rehabilitation, limited healthcare resources mean most patients receive insufficient support. Beautiful Voice addresses this through AI and gamification, enabling patients to access evidence-based exercises while helping healthcare professionals make data-driven decisions.

“Beautiful Voice makes high-quality therapy more accessible, efficient and data-driven,” explains Yun. “We aim to improve treatment outcomes, tackle inequalities in access, and ultimately build a cost-effective, accessible healthcare system for effective communication rehabilitation.”

Yun’s achievements include securing multiple grants from NIHR and Innovate UK, winning the MSDUK Innovative Challenge Social Impact category, and implementing Beautiful Voice across several NHS trusts. Through the Women in Innovation Award, the company will complete final platform development and conduct NHS service evaluations to measure impact on therapy outcomes and cost savings.

“I feel very honoured and excited to be a Women in Innovation Award winner,” says Yun. “Not only is it a validation of the work I have been doing, but also a great opportunity to increase Beautiful Voice’s visibility.”

“Coming from a research background as a first-time founder, navigating the business world has been challenging,” Yun reflects. “It’s especially nerve-wracking pitching as a non-native speaker, but my co-founders’ entrepreneurial experience and skills I’ve learned on accelerator programmes have guided me.”

Her advice to aspiring innovators? “Believe in yourself, find good support for moments when you start doubting yourself, and try out your innovations.”
