Creating digital wellbeing tools to help students reduce screen time
When Ryan Bell realised that his screen time was taking a toll on his mental wellbeing, he searched for solutions but failed to find anything that lasted. He set up Tech Balance, which aims to improve student mental health by tackling screen time problems.
Since winning the Young Innovators Award, Ryan has developed a digital wellbeing curriculum and minimum viable product (MVP) of workshops, which have impacted over 1,000 students.
He applied for the Young Innovators Next Steps Award to capitalise on the progress made so far. He’s now working towards developing, piloting and launching a digital wellbeing app in partnership with a university.
As a solo founder, Ryan highlights the supportive community as one of the main benefits of his past year on the Young Innovators programme. The Award connected him with inspiring entrepreneurs, as well as an Innovation Growth Specialist who has provided “invaluable” guidance.
“I started the Young Innovators programme with an ambitious idea and no real entrepreneurial experience. But with the support of my Innovation Growth Specialist, I have levelled up my skills and knowledge. Mentoring has helped me make challenging business decisions, and given me the confidence to transform my idea into a unique offering,” Ryan says.
