Meet the Innovator – Decarbonisation of Buildings and the Public Estate
Join us to hear from innovative businesses whose products and services are helping local authorities with the decarbonisation of the UK’s buildings and public estate.
Overview
The UK has set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2050. Achieving this target requires transformative action across all sectors, with the public sector playing a vital leadership role in driving change. Success hinges on accelerating the adoption and diffusion of innovative products and services that are driving progress towards net zero. The public sector is uniquely positioned to drive place-based progress, not only by adopting these solutions but also by creating an environment for test beds and trials for products and services which are still in the development and testing stage.
About this event
Operational emissions from heating, cooling and powering buildings, account for 19% of the UK’s carbon footprint. To meet the UK’s net zero target, rapid progress is needed to reduce both operational and embodied carbon emissions from buildings.
This session will showcase the innovative businesses whose products and services are helping local authorities across the UK to decarbonise local building stock and the public estate.

The Centre for Energy Equality is a social enterprise dedicated to a fair and inclusive energy transition. Our flagship system, Fairer Warmth, combines a user-friendly app for tailored energy-saving advice, a data platform for identifying and monitoring energy efficiency needs, and a network of Energy Champions providing face-to-face support for vulnerable or digitally excluded households. Together, these tools create a scalable approach to improving home energy efficiency, increasing grant uptake, and supporting communities on their journey to Net Zero.
Nick is the CEO of Optimise AI, and Commissioner of National Infrastructure Commission (Wales). His team at Optimise have been pivotal in advancing sustainable technology, evidenced by the groundbreaking digital twin technology we’ve introduced to optimise energy management. This innovation has not only garnered recognition as the Michael Moritz Wales Tech Startup of the Year but has also reinforced commitment to delivering solutions that underscore sustainability and growth for our clients and partners.
Dark Matter Labs is a not-for-profit strategic design agency operating across many different places and scales. Recognising the complex, entangled reality of living and human systems, we are exploring alternative pathways for organising society and stewarding the shared planetary commons. Our working hypothesis is that these pathways must be rooted in a radical reframing of our relationship to everything; from technology and money to land and the other-than-human world.
