Background
LUSH opened their first Spa in 2009 and now have 19 spa locations globally (UK, North America, Spain, Dubai, Japan and Korea). There are 10 LUSH spas in the UK.
LUSH Spa offers a multi-sensory spa experience that goes beyond traditional massage by incorporating bespoke music, fragrances, and storytelling to create a holistic treatment. They provide a range of services, including massages, facials, and sound baths, all designed to be both a physical and mental escape. LUSH Spas are designed to feel like a cozy, relaxed “home away from home” rather than a sterile environment.
The challenge
LUSH invites solutions which can address the challenge of directly replacing dry ice with a like-for-like solution that costs less in both financial and environmental impact. Or finding a new innovative solution that will provide a sensory and visual spectacle for their spa treatments, completely eradicating the need for dry ice. Thus, reducing or completely eradicating ongoing high cost and environmental impacts.
LUSH currently buy dry ice from a UK supplier. It is packaged in 6 sheets of polystyrene and driven in non-electric vans. As above it costs around £99k per year, and half of that cost is waste. Each Spa will order between 3 – 5 boxes each week which is around 330 sheets of polystyrene. It is £47.50 for 10kg of dry ice pellets. £22 delivery no matter the quantity ordered and then VAT on top each time.
The Spas do not have big storage spaces to safely and effectively store dry ice to be able to minimise the delivery cost of dry ice.
