About the event series
Climate change is one of the most urgent problems facing the planet and us as human beings. It is not something that is going to happen in the future; it is happening now. It is important that we understand what climate change adaptation is and why it is important for people and businesses to take seriously.
In this webinar series we will provide an overview of climate change adaptation (vs. Mitigation) as well as delve a little deeper into specific topics like the importance of reducing our impact on biodiversity and why cooling systems will be a crucial part of the puzzle in adaptation.
Who is this series for?
- Members of the Climate Change Adaptation Innovation Network.
- Organisations that want to learn more about the importance of Climate Change Adaptation.
- People working in this area that want to contribute to the conversation and find collaborative partners for current and future projects related to climate resilience.

This session presents the main challenges for cooling in the UK and make recommendations on how the UK can adapt to climate change.
As the UK’s temperature continues to rise annually, the need for cooling and the cost associated with cooling spaces within buildings and refrigeration within industrial processes is increasing. Businesses with retail space as well as public buildings such as schools and hospitals will see their energy costs increase as the cooling technologies we use today struggle to maintain a comfortable environment.
Likewise, the manufacturing processes operating in the UK use refrigeration, not just to store and transport the products but also chilling required in the manufacturing process itself. Manufacturing industries such as food & drink, ceramics, chemicals, metals and medicines rely on refrigeration technologies that have to work harder as ambient temperatures rise increasing operating costs.
Speakers:
- Sheena Hindocha, Innovate UK Business Connect
- Graeme Maidment, Dept for Energy Security and Net Zero
- Prof Judith Evans, London South Bank University
