Breaking the innovation deadlock
Advance market commitments, or AMCs, are binding commitments to create a market for an innovative product/service that is not yet commercially developed. It does this based on pre-agreed technical specifications that new products must meet. Put more simply, an AMC is a means of incentivising R&D by promising to buy its outputs.
We need to rapidly scale the adoption of low-carbon concrete solutions to meet the built environment’s 2050 net zero targets. By securing commitments to buy next-generation solutions if they meet pre-agreed criteria, AMCs can unblock barriers to the supply and adoption of innovative low-carbon concrete.
Right now, low-carbon concrete innovations are stuck in a catch-22. Buyers won’t commit because early products often cost more and their performance isn’t proven at scale. But without committed buyers, innovators can’t raise the capital they need to scale up and bring costs down. The AMC solves this deadlock by giving innovators a clear, credible signal of future demand therefore unlocking investment and accelerating progress.
