Maximising water efficiency, enhancing energy access, and boosting crop resilience
Project Partners: Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), Pump Tech Limited (Pumptech), the Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC) and the University for Development Studies (UDS)
This project aims to develop an innovative, climate-smart agricultural solution tailored for smallholder farmers in Ghana and across sub-Saharan Africa.
By integrating agrivoltaics with irrigation, it will establish a synergistic system that maximises water efficiency, enhances energy access, and boosts crop resilience – addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change in agriculture. The initiative synergises the business prowess of Pumptech, a Ghanaian leader in agricultural irrigation solutions, with the intellectual capital of esteemed academic institutions from the UK, Brazil, and Ghana. This multidisciplinary consortium delivers cutting-edge competencies spanning precision irrigation, agrivoltaic systems, electromechanical engineering, and strategic market analytics.
Developing reliable, irrigated agriculture
This innovation has the potential to transform agriculture in the region by enabling a transition from unpredictable rain-fed cropping to reliable, irrigated agriculture. Through increased crop yields, reduced resource waste, and improved climate resilience, the project will bolster food security, stimulate economic development, and promote environmental sustainability across sub-Saharan Africa. Aligned with global climate-smart agriculture objectives, this initiative also supports Ghana’s national strategies for sustainable development and climate action. In addition, it will facilitate knowledge transfer and capacity building, ensuring broad adoption of the new technology among smallholder farmers and remote rural communities in Ghana and beyond.
